J. League first-division strugglers Gamba Osaka and Nagoya Grampus were ousted from the Emperor's Cup on Wednesday, when teams from the top-two tiers entered the competition in the second round.

Gamba, a five-time champion, lost 2-1 at home in extra time against Kwansei Gakuin University, while Grampus were eliminated 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw with Nara Club. Gamba are currently 16th in the 18-team top flight, while Grampus are in last place.

Reigning champion Kawasaki Frontale survived a scare, coming from two goals down at halftime to beat Japan Football League side Sony Sendai FC 3-2 on goals from Tatsuya Hasegawa, Elsinho and Akihiro Ienaga.
