The Tokyo Cinq Reves found a way to win on Sunday, routing the Saitama Broncos 89-61 in Musashino.
By doing so, they snapped an epic 18-game losing streak. Before the bj-league series finale against their Eastern Conference rival, they hadn't come out on top since Nov. 22.
Guard Yuji Ide paced the Cinq Reves (5-29) with 29 points. He sank 6 of 7 6 3-point shots. Post player Zane Knowles added 18 points and 11 rebounds and backcourt standout Jemal Farmer had 17 points and 11 boards. Center Will Foster finished with 10 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks.
Tokyo had 27 turnovers in a mistake-prone game; Saitama coughed up the ball 23 times.
Gary Johnson had 17 points and six steals for the Broncos (4-30). Nyika Williams added 16 points, nine rebounds and five blocks, while Junya Masumoto had an 11-point afternoon.
"Shoutout to all our fans that come out every week and support our team no matter what," Farmer wrote on a Facebook post. It's been a rough year but we appreciate all of you guys! Thanks."
Grouses 90, B-Corsairs 66
In Hiratsuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, Yokohama trailed 31-12 after one quarter, and never recovered.
As a result, Toyama (26-10) completed a series sweep.
Tatsunori Fujie led the Grouses with 20 points and Masashi Joho drained five 3s for the second straight game en route to 18 points.
Joe Werner contributed 13 points and 12 rebounds for the visitors and Jamelle Horne had eight points and five assists. Newcomer Jermaine Dixon, playing his second game for the Grouses, added five points, four rebounds and three assists in 19-plus minutes off the bench.
After the game, Dixon told The Japan Times, "I didn't perform completely the way I wanted to, but as a team we played hard and got two wins. Once I get into a good rhythm on the court I will be fine. I enjoy playing with this team; from the players and coaching, everything is great. This will be a fun few months and hopefully we end it with a championship."
The Grouses had a splendid game in terms of taking care of the basketball — 26 assists, five turnovers.
B-Corsairs forward Carl Hall finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Masayuki Kabaya scored 10 points, Dzaflo Larkai added nine points and 10 boards and Kenji Yamada handed out seven assists for Yokohama (8-26).
Evessa 66, Lakestars 62
In Moriguchi, Osaka Prefecture, Josh Dollard scored a game-high 30 points and knocked down 10 of 11 free throws as the Evessa bounced back from a Saturday loss against Shiga.
Takuya Soma had a nine-point effort for Osaka (22-14).
For the Lakestars (22-12), Terrance Woodbury scored 18 points, while Ray Nixon and Yutaka Yokoe both had eight. Chris Holm hauled in 10 rebounds.
Shiga was held to 4-for-22 shooting from 3-point range.
Hannaryz 78, Bambitious 53
In Kashihara, Nara Prefecture, Kyoto crashed the boards with reckless abandon and controlled the paint in a runaway victory over the Bambitious.
The Hannaryz (30-6) have won four straight games. They are in a three-way tie for the best record in the 10-team West along with Hamamatsu and Ryukyu.
David Palmer had 21 points and nine rebounds for Kyoto. Reggie Warren chipped in with 17 points and 10 rebounds and Kevin Kotzur supplied 14 points and 11 boards. Takuya Komoda scored 12 points and Shun Watanuki doled out seven assists in the win.
The Hannaryz out-rebounded the Bambitious 51-36.
Nara (10-26) was 4-for-21 from beyond the arc. Chehales Tapscott paced the hosts with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Tatsuya Suzuki scored nine points and dished out six assists.
Rizing 83, HeatDevils 81
In Oita, Fukuoka got a boost with nine-time All-Star guard Cohey Aoki's return to the lineup after a nine-game absence due to a leg injury, and the Rizing ended an eight-game slide.
Aoki played all 40 minutes. He had 17 points, five assists and a steal.
Josh Peppers scored 17 points for Fukuoka (8-28), Kirk Van Slyke and John Humphrey had 15 points apiece.
Demetri McCamey led Oita (13-23) with 29 points and six assists, while Todd O'Brien and Drew Barham both had 12. Hiroki Oshiro finished with 11 points.
Crane Thunders 98, Brave Warriors 73
In Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, the Crane Thunders rang up 35 points in the third quarter to grab momentum and they salvaged a series split against Shinshu.
Carlos Dixon guided Gunma's offense with 19 points and seven assists.
Daniel Northern Jr. ended up with 16 points and eight boards and Masashi Obuchi and Melvin Ely had 12 points apiece. Ely, a former NBA big man, added eight rebounds for the Crane Thunders (13-21).
Mohamed Abukar was the Brave Warriors' top scorer (20 points). Teammate Terrance Jennings had 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Shinshu (14-20) missed 16 of 19 3s in the loss.
Golden Kings 100, Susanoo Magic 69
In Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, on-target Draelon Burns buried 5 of 6 3-pointers and scored a game-best 20 points as Ryukyu earned a series split.
Ryuichi Kishimoto had 19 points for the defending champion Golden Kings. Anthony McHenry scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Kibwe Trim contributed 12 points and seven rebounds.
For Shimane (12-24), Joe Chapman had 16 points and seven assists, Edward Yamamoto scored 11 points and Wesley Witherspoon finished with 10.
Phoenix 76, Five Arrows 73
In Zentsuji, Kagawa Prefecture, Mo Charlo's 24-point, 14-rebound performance sparked Hamamatsu to its second victory in as many days over Takamatsu.
Olu Ashaolu had 13 points for the Phoenix, Masahiro Oguchi scored 12 and Jermaine Green added 11 points and seven assists.
Dexter Lyons led the Five Arrows (10-26) with 25 points and B.J. Puckett scored 13. Justin Watts added 11 points.
Wat's 89, Firebonds 70
In Towada, Aomori Prefecture, the Wat's thoroughly dominated in the rebounding department (59-33) in a comprehensive victory over Fukushima.
Gordon Klaiber scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Aomori (19-17). His three steals and three blocks were a part of a standout performance. Gyno Pomare had nine points and 13 boards and Paul Williams added eight points and 11 rebounds. Kyle Richardson chipped in with 16 points and Kenichi Takahashi had 11 points, while Daisuke Takaoka scored eight.
Masaya Karimata led the Firebonds (12-24) with 22 points and five assists and Verdell Jones III scored 14 points, while Edward Morris added 12.
Fukushima dropped both games in the weekend series.
Big Bulls 89, 89ers 83 (OT)
In Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, the Big Bulls outlasted Sendai in overtime and secured a series sweep over their Tohoku rival.
Wayne Arnold sparked Iwate (29-7) with 22 points and 11 rebounds and Masato Tsukino added 16 points and five assists. Lawrence Blackledge filled the stat sheet with 15 points, nine rebounds, five assists, three steals and a pair of blocks. Scootie Randall finished with 14 points.
For the 89ers (22-14), Kejuan Johnson had 22 points, 14 rebounds and six assists and Wendell White scored 21 points. Big man Jeral Davis added 15 points, 10 boards and seven blocks. Takehiko Shimura supplied 10 points.
Albirex BB 93, Northern Happinets 83
In Akita, Niigata's balanced scoring carried the team to a bounce-back win over the hosts.
Six Albirex players reached double figures in points. Patrick Sullivan had a team-high 22 points with 12 rebounds and Thomas Kennedy scored 18 points for Niigata (22-14), which sealed the win at the free-throw line, where it sank 27 of 33 shots.
Shigehiro Taguchi paced Akita (29-7) with 20 points and Richard Roby netted 18. Deshawn Stephens added 14 points and seven rebounds.
