Don't expect the Hamamatsu Higashimikawa Phoenix's New Year's resolution to be any different than their overall season goal: to compete for a championship.
The Phoenix provided a bold reminder of that on Saturday, trouncing the host Bambitious Nara 92-66 to extend their bj-league winning streak to 13 games.
Mo Charlo scored 25 points, knocking down 4 of 6 3-pointers, and grabbing 10 rebounds in a spirited effort for Western Conference-leading Hamamatsu (22-3). Olu Ashaolu added 19 points and Nile Murry and Jermaine Green both scored 13. Masahiro Oguchi had 11 points, converting all three of his 3-point attempts, off the bench.
The Phoenix took a 50-32 cushion into the third quarter.
Andre Murray led Nara (9-14) with 15 points. Tatsuya Suzuki and Chehales Tapscott each scored 12 and Taishi Kasahara had 11 with five steals.
Seven Hamamatsu players had at least one steal.
The Bambitious turned the ball over 25 times.
HeatDevils 96, Broncos 73
In Beppu, Oita Prefecture, Demetri McCamey had a game-high 29 points for the HeatDevils and Todd O'Brien finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds against Saitama.
For Oita (9-16), Taishiro Shimizu contributed eight points and five assists. Drew Barham also scored eight points and Kellen Thornton and Hiroki Oshiro both poured in seven.
Ari Stewart and Nyika Williams had 20 points apiece for the Broncos (0-23), who amassed 28 turnovers, including Williams' team-high seven.
Saitama played its seventh game since head coach Kazuaki Shimoji was diagnosed with bacterial endocarditis, a heart illness, last month. He has not coached a game since Dec. 7.
Takahisa Yamaguchi, the Broncos' trainer/strength and conditioning coach, has stepped in to run the team during Shimoji's absence.
"This has been a roller-coaster ride all season," Saitama forward Gary Johnson, who scored nine points, told The Japan Times on Saturday.
"It's been very frustrating just because we work hard every day and prepare ourselves to win every game, but I honestly feel like we have not been a complete team all season. (At the) beginning of the season we competed with two Americans. Now we got a full roster, and our coach is in the hospital. No room for excuses.
"My teammates and I still have the utmost confidence, and we know if we keep fighting and working hard, good things will start too happen.
"Coach Shimoji's absence (has) affected us tremendously. He is our leader. It's affected us mostly mentally. We look forward to getting coach back on the court."
Lakestars 91, Rizing 55
In Kusatsu, Shiga Prefecture, Fukuoka had a league-record 32 turnovers in the first game since it was announced Joe Bryant would take over as Rizing coach for the club's Jan. 17-18 home series.
Lakestars forward Jeff Parmer had five of the hosts' 15 steals. He added 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Ray Nixon topped the scoring charts for Shiga (14-7) with 20 points. Terrance Woodbury and Masahiro Kano supplied 15 points apiece in the rout. Yu Okada contributed 10 points.
The Rizing, currently led by 25-year-old coach Ken Hamanaka since James Duncan was axed on Dec. 22, shot 2-for-14 from 3-point range and 18-for-38 inside the arc.
Fukuoka (6-19) broke Shinshu's league record of 31 turnovers, set in a March 17, 2012, game against Akita.
Josh Peppers was the Rizing's high scorer with 18 points. Kirk Van Slyke added 14 and Greg Logins had 11 with 12 boards.
Golden Kings 91, Brave Warriors 62
In Naha, Okinawa Prefecture, Draelon Burns' 23 points fueled a balanced scoring attack and Ryukyu completed a series sweep of Shinshu.
Anthony McHenry and Ryuichi Kishimoto had 15 points apiece, the latter sinking 4 of 6 3s. Narito Namizato had an 11-point afternoon and Morihisa Yamauchi and Hiromasa Omiya each scored eight points.
McHenry finished with team-high totals in rebounds (seven) and assists (five).
The defending champion Golden Kings (22-4) outscored the Brave Warriors 28-9 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. That made it 80-50.
