The Toyama Grouses ended a season-long losing streak on Sunday, earning a 74-70 victory over the visiting Takamatsu Five Arrows.
The Grouses (1-13) lost the series opener 97-81 on Saturday, but returned the favor a day later by getting double-digit scoring from six players: Masayuki Kabaya (16 points), Takanori Goya (13), Uka Agbai and Jamar Brown (12), Robby Joyner (11) and Kazutoshi Ohta (10).
In fact, those six guys scored all of Toyama’s points. For Goya, the bj-league’s No. 1 overall draft pick two seasons ago, his 13 points represented a season-high total, topping the 12 he scored in the series opener.
The Five Arrows’ Reggie Warren and George Leach led the team with 16 points apiece, Yu Okada added 13 and Rasheed Sparks had nine points, 10 rebounds and four assists.
In Tokorozawa, Saitama Prefecture, the host Broncos handed the Rizing Fukuoka an 85-66 defeat.
Saitama forward Mamadou Diouf scored a season-best 28 points, grabbed eight boards and dished out five assists. Gordon James contributed 21 points and 17 rebounds, while Andrew Feeley scored 12.
Michael Gardener’s 18 points led Fukuoka. Teammate Jeffrey Price had a 15-point game and Joshua Peppers picked up 14.
The Sendai 89ers outlasted the host Niigata Albirex BB 100-96 in overtime.
In a wild fourth quarter, the Albirex scored 46 points, Sendai had 26 and the game was tied at 86-all entering the bonus period.
Niigata had 40 points in the first three quarters combined before its offense erupted.
Ryan Blackwell scored a game-high 27 points for the winners, Nick DeWitz had 26 and Bobby St. Preux 20.
Rodney Webb, Matt Garrison and Andrew Preston each scored 20 apiece and Takamichi Fujiwara dished out seven assists for the Albirex.
Elsewhere, the Oita HeatDevils posted a 107-93 triumph over the visiting Ryukyu Golden Kings. Andy Ellis (29 points, 13 rebounds), Chris Ayer (25 points, 10 boards), Justin Allen (19 points), Tsubasa Yonamine (six points, 13 assists) and Yukinori Suzuki (11 points) made significant statistical contributions for Oita.
For Ryukyu, rising star Naoto Takushi scored 25 and made eight assists, Eric Walton had a 21-point outing and Taira Yoshida added 17 points.
