Takashi Koshimoto will take on champion Chi In Jin of South Korea in a WBC featherweight world title fight Jan. 29 in Fukuoka, boxing sources said Wednesday.
Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation featherweight champion Koshimoto turns 35 on Jan. 5 and victory over Chi would make him the oldest Japanese boxer to win a world title.
Koshimoto's first shot at the title in 2000 ended in defeat when he was knocked out in the ninth round by American Freddy Norwood.
"I am glad I never gave up over these past five years and I want from the bottom of my heart to become the world champion," said Koshimoto.
Koichi Wajima holds the record as the oldest Japanese boxer to claim a world title at 32 years and nine months.
