Japanese record-holder Miho Sugimori won the women’s 1,500 meters in a meet record time on the opening day of the Asian athletics championships Thursday.

Sugimori clocked 4 minutes, 12.69 seconds in a race that also saw compatriot Yuriko Kobayashi take bronze. In other action, Yumi Sato finished runnerup in the women’s 10,000 meters in 33:42.11. Shingo Suetsugu and Nobuharu Asahara breezed into the men’s 100-meter final.
