Takuya Matsuhashi threw a two-hit shutout to lead defending champion Komadai Tomakomai to a 5-0 victory over first-timer Seishin Ursula Gakuen in the second round at the national high school baseball championship Thursday.

Matsuhashi dominated with a fastball that clocked over 140 kph at Koshien Stadium as the Hokkaido school moved into the third round of the 15-day tournament.

In Thursday's other second-round games, Japan Aviation of Yamanashi Prefecture overcame a five-run deficit to beat Fukui Shogyo 8-7 while Maebashi Shogyo held off a late charge by Kumamoto Kogyo for a close 5-3 victory.

In the day's final second-round game, Kazuya Nagasawa broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run double in the third inning of Choshi Shogyo's 7-1 victory over Tottori Nishi.

Hikaru Endo struck out 12 in 8 1/3 innings and Nagasawa homered in the eighth for the Chiba school.
