Up-and-coming speedskater Joji Kato set a rink record in the second run to win the men's 500 meters at the Makomanai invitational meet Saturday, edging world record holder Hiroyasu Shimizu. Kato, who trailed Shimizu by 0.07 after his first run of 36.33 seconds, clocked 36.07 in the second run at the Makomanai outdoor rink to win his first title at the annual meet with a meet-record total of 1:12.40.
