CHEJU ISLAND, South Korea – Japan, which crashed out of the women’s volleyball World Grand Prix series a day earlier, defeated rival South Korea 3-1 on the final day of the first-round competition Saturday.
Japan come from behind to take the first set 29-27 and went on to win the second set 25-19. South Korea hit back for a 25-21 win in the next set before Japan completed the victory with a 25-22 score. Japan finished with a 2-7 record at the tournament while undefeated Brazil beat defending Olympic champion Cuba 3-0 to finish in first place with nine wins in as many matches. Cuba suffered its first defeat to end at 8-1.
