Asashoryu remained in total control at the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament on Wednesday as the fiery yokozuna spanked winless Dejima to stay unbeaten on the fourth day of the 15-day meet.
The Mongolian bruiser quickly punished the former ozeki for jumping the gun in the day’s final bout at Ryogoku Kokugikan by flipping him over in a matter of seconds to keep his share of the lead and extend his winning streak to 34.
The win improved Asashoryu’s chances of becoming the first wrestler in over half a century to win three straight Emperor’s Cups without a defeat. Four others are tied for the lead at 4-0.
Elsewhere, yokozuna-chasing Chiyotaikai suffered a shock defeat to unbeaten maegashira Hokutoriki but fellow Kaio won comfortably and Musoyama rebounded from back-to-back defeats for his second win.
Kaio, who also has an outside shot at yokozuna, quickly gained control of his bout against Tochinonada as he pulled his the top-ranked maegashira off balance before bumping him out from behind to stay one win behind the leaders.
Musoyama slapped down komusubi Kotomitsuki, leaving both men with 2-2 records but Chiyotaikai let the ozeki camp down as he was chased around the ring and pushed to the dirt for his first loss.
At sumo’s third rank of sekiwake, Wakanosato (3-1) comfortably sent third-ranked Shimotori out to a first defeat but Kyokutenho (1-3) was overpowered by fellow Mongolian Asasekiryu, who picked up a hard-earned first win of the tournament.
Miyabiyama’s disappointing form continued on his return to komusubi after he was pulled down to a fourth straight defeat by Tokitsuumi, who kept his place among the early front-runners along with four wins.
In the lower ranks, Kokkai prevailed in a tightly fought contest against Tochisakae (2-2) as the No. 7 maegashira the former Soviet republic of Georgia improved to 3-1 while colorful maegashira Takamisakari yanked out Kakizoe to level his score at 2-2.
