You can't beat country life

I was down in Kyushu with some Japanese friends last year, just sipping a few drinks and chatting. The conversation turned to kabu and became very serious and somewhat gloomy. Quite honestly, I wasn't really following it all, but I felt I had to put in my two-pennies' worth.

Pondering the process of filling in the final page of a person's life

In the late 1980s, the mother of a close female friend of ours in Tokyo went into hospital for a hysterectomy. This is major, if fairly routine, surgery.

'The Punk Rock Movie'/'Rockers'

Back in the spring of 1977, Don Letts was the DJ at the Roxy, the legendary punk club located in London's Covent Garden. The Roxy was the one club where punk rock hadn't been banned, but the club's life span was a mere 100 days, as it faced a maelstrom of violence, noise complaints and police raids....

Life — it's all in the books

Sometimes it seems I live holiday to holiday. Having just finished Respect for the Aged Day, and the Autumn Equinox (both national holidays) I am now looking forward to Sports Day in October. The problem with national holidays in Japan, however, is that they are rarely a chance to relax. Instead, they...

Right to life has priority

Three cheers for Barbara Smith's insightful commentary on feminism and what a real feminist is versus the now worn-out Gloria Steinem type ("New face of American feminism," Sept. 18 letter). It is not too much to say that Sarah Palin in many ways models this new feminism, which sees women not in some...

'Tokyo!'

Like any other big city, Tokyo does things to you. The three directors in the omnibus movie "Tokyo!" however, inflict their penetrating stare upon the city and don't flinch when the city gazes right back — they all give as good as they get. They know that what happens here is both unique and ubiquitous...

On Dec. 7, 1941, a 17-year-old high school student named Donald Richie was fixing the fence at his house in Lima, Ohio, when his mother ran out on the porch to tell him and his father that she just heard over the radio that Japanese forces had attacked Pearl Harbor.

Reality of life without a god

I am saddened but not surprised by the backlash that Peter Singer's May 19 article, "If there is a god, then why is there suffering?," has received. At a loss for a logical argument against his proposal, many have resigned to attacking Singer's character or making completely irrelevant claims.

'Jellyfish'

War and its implications are the first things one tends to associate with Israeli cinema, perhaps because those kind of films are the ones that make it to the film festivals and get international releases (most notable are the works of director Amos Gitai).
