I was interested in the comment in the Aug. 13 editorial, "Muddling as the economy sinks," that some people earlier this month seemed to welcome a default on U.S. debt obligations.

I would not use the word "welcome." I liken it to watching a wayward son with sloppy financing finally reaping what he's sowed. You don't want to see him get into financial trouble, but you realize it's the only way he will learn his lesson.

You "welcome" it only to the extent that it helps him to learn and grow, but with the sadness of a parent watching a son plunge headlong into trouble of his own making.
