In less than a week the Japanese whaling fleet will leave Japan headed for the Southern Ocean and the start of this year's whale slaughter. Sea Shepherd has named this year's antiwhaling campaign Operation Migaloo after "Migaloo," the albino humpback whale that has become a favorite with Australian East Coast whale-watchers.

Japan will hunt and kill humpback whales this year and that means Migaloo could be killed and butchered in the name of so-called scientific research. The Japanese plan to kill 50 endangered humpback whales and 10 endangered fin whales.

Japan this week called on Australia to protect its whale fleet against Sea Shepherd "pirates" who are only trying to save the whales. I believe Australia should protect the whales by policing Australian territorial waters such as the Ross Sea.

Japanese harpooners will be focused on killing as many whales as they can. The whales are dragged by their tails with their heads under water, squealing to their mates as they drown. Their bodies burn from the explosion of the grenade from the harpoon that has pierced their bodies. When the bodies are on the deck, their flesh is peeled away while they are still warm.

I ask all Australians to join with me and demand that the Australian government protect the whales in the Southern Ocean this year, and hopefully we will see Migaloo and his family safe in the warm waters of our east coast again next year.
