Liberal Democratic Party lawmakers vented their frustration Tuesday over its long-time junior coalition partner Komeito leaving the ruling camp, with some saying Shigeru Ishiba should stay on as prime minister and delay the prime ministerial vote until LDP President Sanae Takaichi can guarantee her win.

Tuesday’s meeting reflects a sense of crisis among party members who worry whether the LDP, no longer able to rely on Komeito’s support, can secure the votes needed to win the parliamentary vote for prime minister before the expected opening of parliament early next week, possibly on Oct. 21.

In the meeting with LDP lawmakers from both chambers, Takaichi explained why Komeito leader Tetsuo Saito decided to end its 26-year partnership with the LDP, and how she intends to lead the party forward.
