Struggling with a shortage of bus and taxi drivers, transportation operators in Aomori Prefecture are showing strong interest in retiring Self-Defense Forces members seeking a second career.
Many SDF officers retire in their mid-50s, and most of them hold a driver’s license for large vehicles, creating the potential for them to work as drivers.
The city of Hirosaki in Aomori Prefecture, which hosts the Ground Self-Defense Force’s Camp Hirosaki, and the SDF’s Aomori Provincial Cooperation Office in the city of Aomori are working together to offer information and internship programs for retiring SDF members. The SDF has a provincial cooperation office in each of the prefectures to recruit new officers and help retiring officers find new jobs.
