Former Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen is visiting Japan, her office said, prompting an angry rebuke from China on Wednesday.
The visit to Japan, which does not have official diplomatic relations with Taiwan, was the first known trip to the country by Tsai since she left office in May 2024.
In a statement to Taiwan’s official Central News Agency, Tsai’s office confirmed the visit, saying she is visiting Japan “on a personal trip ... with no official schedule planned.” It declined to provide further details about the visit.
