The race to become the next president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party has kicked off with a bang in the wake of the announcement by Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba that he is stepping down following a defeat in a summer election.

One presidential hopeful announced his bid for the LDP leadership as early as Monday morning as the party sets the stage for its upcoming presidential election.

Former LDP Secretary-General Toshimitsu Motegi became the first to throw his hat into the ring Monday. He emphasized his track record within the party and the government.
