The city assembly of Ito in Shizuoka Prefecture on Monday unanimously passed a no-confidence motion against Mayor Maki Takubo, 55, who is alleged to have falsified her academic record.

After being notified of the result by the assembly chair, Takubo has 10 days to decide whether to dissolve the assembly or resign.

The mayor had claimed to have graduated from Toyo University, but in July, she admitted that she was, in fact, expelled from the university.

During a hearing by the assembly's special investigation committee in August, Takubo said she did not know about the expulsion until June 28, after she was first elected mayor in May.

In July, Takubo had announced her intention to resign and run in a fresh mayoral election but later withdrew her resignation.

The city assembly concluded her claim of not knowing about her university expulsion until June 28 was false, citing evidence such as documents provided by the university. It also accused the mayor of refusing to submit a document she claimed was her diploma.

Prior to the no-confidence vote, the assembly formally decided to file a criminal complaint against her on suspicion of violating the local autonomy law.

The no-confidence resolution condemns the mayor for taking lightly her duties, including complying with laws and regulations and ensuring public interest. It urges her to leave office immediately.

"I'll make a decision after seeing the content of the no-confidence resolution," Takubo told reporters on Monday.
