The Justice Ministry said Wednesday its budget requests for fiscal 2026, which starts next April, will focus on measures related to foreign nationals in the country.

The ministry said it will call for ¥877.5 billion in overall funding, an 8.9% increase from the fiscal 2025 budget.

The total includes ¥22.9 billion for measures linked to foreign workers, a 2.3-fold rise. The ministry will promote efforts to crack down on illegal overstaying, including early implementation of deportation orders.

The budget requests also include ¥18.3 billion for measures that respond to an increase in foreign tourists. The ministry will call for research on a planned online travel authorization system for visitors from visa-exempt countries without specifying the amount involved.
