Liberal Democratic Party lawmakers will need to come clean publicly on where they stand over a potential presidential election to oust Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, the party’s leader, a party election committee decided Wednesday.
Party executives have put pressure on lawmakers to take a clear stance on the current debate — despite Ishiba enjoying rising popularity.
After the meeting, veteran Ichiro Aisawa, the chairman of the party election committee, told reporters that lawmakers will be asked to sign and seal a paper and bring it to party headquarters if they are in favor of holding an early election.
