The government will raise subsidies under a domestic tourism campaign from ¥5,000 to as much as ¥8,000 per person, covering both accommodation and transportation fees, when it expands the currently regional program to the whole country in July, tourism minister Tetsuo Saito said Friday.
A ¥2,000 coupon for dining and shopping will become a ¥1,000 coupon on weekends and ¥3,000 on weekdays. In total, travelers on package trips will get up to ¥11,000 per night per person. The campaign will run from the first half of July through the end of August, excluding the Bon holidays in mid-August.
"We want to promote trips to places that are further away," Saito told a news conference.
