Hackers gained access to some names, emails and encrypted passwords of users of MeetMe Inc.'s social network, the company said.
The attack occurred between Aug. 5-7, said Aaron Curtiss, a hired spokesman for the company based in New Hope, Pennsylvania. There was no indication any accounts were accessed or financial information was compromised, he said.
MeetMe had 864,000 average daily mobile users in June, Geoffrey Cook, chief executive officer, said on an Aug. 4 conference call. Company officials rang the opening bell at the Nasdaq stock exchange on Aug. 5 when the attack began.
"Although the vulnerability has since been closed, MeetMe recommended to its users who logged in after Aug. 5 that they change their passwords and, if they used their MeetMe passwords for other purposes, to change them there as well," Curtiss, a senior executive with communications company G.F. Bunting, said in an email.
