A group of 14 electronics and telecom companies will set up a forum aimed at creating a single industry standard for Internet-capable digital home appliances, industry officials said Wednesday.

The Ubiquitous Open Platform Forum will be aimed at allowing participating companies to save costs in the development of technological standards for Internet appliances, the officials said.

The companies include Sony Corp., NTT Communications Corp., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Toshiba Corp., Sanyo Electric Co., Sharp Corp., Nifty Corp. and KDDI Corp.

At present, electronics makers are developing their own platforms for Internet appliances.
