Japan Airlines System Corp. said Friday it will introduce a mileage program in March for passengers' pets on domestic flights.

The JAL Group will also simplify its airfare system for pets to lower prices on most domestic routes, it said.

Passengers using the new pets' mileage program, known as JAL Pet Club, can exchange points for cage rentals on flights, pet airfares and gifts, according to the holding company of Japan Airlines Co. and Japan Air System Co.

"We are unaware of any similar services targeting pets offered by other airlines, Japanese or foreign," a company spokesman said.

The JAL Group allows passengers on domestic flights to check their dogs, cats, birds and other animals that fit in designated cages into cargo holds. Dogs assisting blind or deaf passengers can travel in the passenger cabin free of charge.
