Japan is not convinced that North Korea is ready to abandon its nuclear arms program despite recent signs of a compromise, Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi told a visiting South Korean official Wednesday.

"Judging from recent moves, I believe there are positive signals from North Korea," Kawaguchi told Ra Jong Yil, the Blue House national security adviser, according to a ministry official. "But they are not clear enough for us to be confident" that the North will abandon its nuclear weapons program.

Ra said there are still points to be clarified, adding that Seoul will closely watch Pyongyang's next moves.
