Warplanes from the U.S. aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk will conduct night landing practice from Oct. 18 through Oct. 27 on Iwojima Island and the Atsugi Naval Air Facility in Kanagawa Prefecture, the U.S. Naval Forces Japan announced on Friday.

When the weather is bad, the exercises on Iwojima, 1,250 km south of Tokyo, may be shifted to the Atsugi base, the Iwakuni Marine base in Yamaguchi Prefecture and the Yokota air base in Tokyo.

The 86,000-ton aircraft carrier is virtually home-ported in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, and took active roles in the 2001 U.S-led air strikes in Afghanistan and the Iraq war earlier this year.
