A distributor of milk from agricultural cooperatives said Saturday it is recalling liter cartons of milk made at a plant in Atsugi, Kanagawa Prefecture, because some of them may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria.

Subject to the recall are 6,654 cartons made Thursday and shipped to Tokyo, Kanagawa and Shizuoka prefectures, Zenkoku Nokyo Chokuhan said.

All but 157 cartons were removed from shelves before they were bought following a company request to do so, it said.

There have been no complaints by consumers to date and the cause of the contamination is being investigated, the company said.
