An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 3.5 jolted Kozushima and other islands in the Izu Island chain south of Tokyo at 2:32 p.m. Tuesday, the Meteorological Agency said.
There were no reports of casualties and no tsunami warning was issued.
The quake registered 4 on the Japanese intensity scale of 7 on Kozushima and 2 on Shikine Island, about 20 km south of Kozushima. It measured 1 on nearby Niijima, the agency said.
The focus of the quake was estimated to be 10 km below the seabed off Kozushima and Niijima, it said.
