The Tokyo Metropolitan Government began preparations Friday to evacuate hundreds of students from Miyake Island and temporarily relocate them at facilities in Tokyo due to the continuing threat of eruptions from Mount Oyama and the health risks posed by ash from the volcano, officials said.
The metropolitan government has agreed to receive 327 elementary and junior high school students and 115 high school students tentatively for one month through the end of September in response to a request from the Miyake village office.
The board of education on Miyake Island decided Thursday to temporarily move all 327 elementary and junior high school students and 115 students at Miyake High School off the island as volcanic activity continues on Mount Oyama.
