A 43-year-old wife fatally stabbed her husband with a fruit knife early Monday because he opposed her going on a summer trip with their son and the wife's friends, police said.
Junko Saito of Tokyo's Edogawa Ward stabbed her husband, Yasuo, 43, at around 1:20 a.m. He died at a hospital two hours later. Police arrested Saito on the spot for attempted murder, later changing the charge to murder pending further investigation.
According to police, Saito was discussing a summer holiday plan to leave Thursday for a trip to Nagoya and Kyoto with her friends and 11-year-old son, without her husband.
The husband reportedly opposed the idea, threw empty beer cans at her and pushed her down to the floor. Saito brought a 12.5-cm fruit knife from the kitchen and stabbed him once in the left side of his chest, police said.
Saito was quoted by the police as saying her husband had a bad drinking habit and was very drunk at the time, but she had not intended to kill him.
