KDD, the nation's leading international telecommunications carrier, said Tuesday it is moving toward a merger with Teleway Corp., a firm affiliated with Toyota Motor Corp. that handles domestic long-distance services.
While KDD President Tadashi Nishimoto left open the possibility of merging with other long-distance carriers, he confirmed that KDD sees Teleway as the "leading candidate."
Nishimoto disclosed the plan following an announcement earlier in the day by Posts and Telecommunications Minister Shozaburo Jimi of a government decision to fully privatize KDD, which is currently governed by a special law. Jimi said the government plans to submit a bill to the Diet in January or soon after for scrapping the KDD Law.
