Powerful Typhoon No. 11 was expected to pass near northern Kyushu late August 8 through this morning, bringing strong winds and heavy rain, the Meteorological Agency said August 8.

The typhoon, however, is not expected to directly hit the region as it slowly moves north, the agency said. The Goto Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture were within an area of winds experiencing gusts up to 54 kph late August 8. Northern Kyushu was also expected to be hit by similar strength winds, it said.

If the typhoon takes an easterly path, winds of up to 90 kph may hit the Goto islands later August 8 and Tsushima Island, also in Nagasaki Prefecture, from this morning, the agency said. As of noon August 8, the typhoon was about 330 km southwest of Fukue, Nagasaki Prefecture, moving north at a speed of about 15 kph.

The storm has an atmospheric pressure of 965 hectopascals at its center and is packing winds of up to 126 kph, the agency said. The agency predicts the accumulated precipitation on the Goto Islands and northern Kyushu to reach between 200 mm and 250 mm.
