The culture of geiko (geisha in Kyoto), can be accessible at a lower cost than a shinkansen ride to the city — unless ozashiki-asobi (parlor games) is all you want.
Next weekend marks the start of Gion Odori, an annual dance program featuring a bevy of traditional entertainers from Kyoto's Gion Higashi district.
The geiko will appear first at the Gion Kaikan theater to honor the new Reiwa Era. This will be followed by six different performances before a rendition by all dancers, including maiko (geisha apprentices), of the area's trademark song "Gion Higashi Kouta." (Yuki Yamauchi)
