In Aomori Prefecture, eye-catching nebuta floats are the symbol of summer festivals. The city of Mutsu, however, has its own take on getting into a party mood with yama floats, which will be shown around Tanabu Shrine from Aug. 18 to 20 at the Tanabu Matsuri festival.
If you're hoping for a rowdier display of festive spirits, stick around until midnight on the final day — cask sake will be offered to visitors and locals.
For additional entertainment, there will be a demonstration of local traditional dance on Sunday and a parade of mikoshi (portable shrines) the following day. (Yuki Yamauchi)
