Dr. Struensee (Mads Mikkelsen), an enlightened German intellectual, is hired to coach Christian on the basics of managing a kingdom, being a husband and other useful skills. Christian turns to putty in the hands of the learned doctor — but so does Caroline. Soon the pair are in the throes of a passionate secret affair that's just as much about love and lust as it is about bringing about enlightened political reforms.

Director Nikolaj Arcel leans a bit heavy on the couples' joint project and its subsequent repercussions than their actual affair. Still, the story packs plenty of momentum and at least no one here is plagued by introverted, to-be-or-not-to-be hangups.
