The National Art Center's "Artist File" is an annual project, which began in 2008 with the aim of introducing the latest trends in Japan's art industry. It looks for diversity by deliberately avoiding any specific theme for artists to work with and by accepting applications regardless of age or nationality. The exhibitions therefore present many mediums — from paintings and photos to sculpture and installations.
One thread that does run through the show, however, is that all the artists all believe in infinite potential of what they can create. Key participants this year include British artist Darren Almond, avant-garde Japanese artist Jun Azumatei and Indian painter Nalini Malani; Jan. 23-April 4.
