Each of the five candidates for the presidency of the Liberal Democratic Party — and presumptive next prime minister — is reaching out to the larger conservative parties, Nippon Ishin no Kai and the Democratic Party for the People, to garner their support.

That’s because after two disastrous national elections under Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, the new LDP leader will require one or more of the opposition parties to back their election as prime minister and support the incoming administration’s legislative policies.
