The Liberal Democratic Party and Japan Innovation Party (JIP) agreed to form a coalition Monday, making it almost certain that LDP President Sanae Takaichi, who had struggled to find a new ally, will become Japan’s first female prime minister Tuesday.
The leaderships of both parties met Monday evening in Tokyo to formally sign a coalition agreement. The two parties had set a Monday deadline to reach an agreement.
After signing the agreement, Takaichi stressed that political stability is key in pushing any kind of policy, from economy and diplomacy to national security.
