After falling short in both of their previous final appearances, the third time was the charm for the Chiba Jets Funabashi.

Chiba finally captured its first league title with a 71-62 win over the Utsunomiya Brex in the decisive third game of the B. League Finals at Yokohama Arena on Tuesday, Kaz Nagatsuka reports.

Game 3 was a closer affair than both Saturday’s series opener, in which the Jets overwhelmed the Brex 85-65, and the follow-up Sunday. In Game 2, Utsunomiya turned the tables, showcasing their high-energy brand of basketball on the way to a 83-58 win.

Meanwhile in Austria on Sunday, Japan’s women’s 3×3 basketball team punched its ticket to the Tokyo Games with a dramatic 20-18 win over Spain in overtime of the third-place game at the FIBA 3×3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament, Nagatsuka reports.

Japan lost to France, the world’s top team, in the quarterfinals earlier in the day but snatched a berth in their home-soil Olympics by clinching the bronze.

As for the women’s regular basketball team, point guard Nako Motohashi thought the door to her Olympic dream had slammed shut when she suffered ligament damage to her right knee in November, she tells Nagatsuka. But seven months on, she’s back in training with the team and hopeful of making a full recovery in time for the games.
