Getting along with China
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, delivering a government work report at the third session of the 11th National People's Congress in March, claimed that China was "first in the world to realize economic recovery and positive turnaround" following the international financial crisis, and that its strategies for "reform, opening up and social modernization" brought about "new achievements."

Google walkout will expand the possibilities
NEW YORK — Usually, disclosure statements go at the end of an article, but let me start with mine. I sit on the board of Yandex, a Russian Internet search company with a roughly 60 percent market share in Russia, compared to Google's 20 percent or so.

One-sided view of military burden
Your April 15 editorial "Funding for U.S. military facilities" is, unfortunately, consistent with a trend that's fairly prevalent in the Japanese media -- the one-sided theme of the "burden" borne by Japan for hosting U.S. military facilities. In this editorial the burden was financial, in others it dwells on the myth of disproportionate crime, noise, etc.

Keep out torch-protection unit
Recently I saw video footage of members of the Chinese government's Olympic Games Sacred Flame Protection Unit -- reportedly from the same paramilitary People's Armed Police that crush protesters in Beijing and Tibet -- roughing up Britons in Britain and Frenchmen in France. It is odd that the Olympic torch is considered more "sacred" than the citizens of other countries (including legendary athletes like Sebastian Coe) on their own soil. As a Christian who believes that individual life is a sacred gift, I pray for people of all faiths, as well as those of no faith, to be less afraid of, and readier to love, one another.

World leader for president
HONG KONG — The 187 countries meeting to discuss climate change in Bali, Indonesia, this month narrowly averted a total breakdown by agreeing to set 2009 as the deadline for a new treaty to limit greenhouse-gas emissions. For that deadline to be met, China and the United States will both need to agree to something they have resisted so far: binding commitments on emission reductions.

U.K. liberties versus security
LONDON — The director general of the British Security Services (MI5) has been telling the world that there are at least 2,000 people inside Britain who are involved in terrorism-related activities, and there may be many more. Or to put it crudely, there are at least 2,000 individuals bent on killing innocent Britons as they go about their daily business.

Reagan liked a number of people
Regarding the May 24 article "Reagan thought Nakasone 'best' Japan leader": It might be noted that in the early 1980s, Reagan also admired Saddam Hussein (fighting the Iranians) and even Panama's little drug-dealing dictator Manuel Noriega, who is now sitting quietly in a Florida prison cell after being arrested and convicted on related criminal charges.

Blogger editorial disappoints
I was excited to see an editorial about the ascendancy of blogging in Japan . . . until I actually read all of it ("Japan as number-one blogger," April 22). While it could have been an engaging celebration of this boom in people's media, it ended up being a lame and quite bizarre attempt to downplay the importance of blogs.

Longform

When trying to trace your lineage in Japan, the "koseki" is the most important form of document you'll encounter.
