'Illusion of light: Museum of the Magic, Art in Wonderland'
"Museum of the Magic, Art in Wonderland" has already visited 18 locations across Japan, drawing in a total of more than 500,000 visitors. Due to popular demand, it was even repeated at some of its venues. This is the 23rd showing of the exhibition and its first time in Tokyo. An interactive show, the artworks make use of light, shadows and reflections, allowing visitors to participate through watching, touching and "joining in," making this a particularly good show for kids.

Art fiction that keeps our thinking adept
What is the connection between Kampala in Uganda, Fukushima in Japan and New Orleans in America? Tsuyoshi Ozawa links these seemingly disparate places in his ongoing series "Vegetable Weapons". The shape of a gun is formed out of local vegetables and photographed, before it's taken apart and the same vegetables become the ingredients for a dinner party.

'Shinjuku Creators Festa 2013'
Tokyo celebrates all things creative at the "Shinjuku Creators Festa," a 17-day art event being held around the city's Shinjuku Station. World-famous names, such as Yayoi Kusama and CG-artist Yoichiro Kawaguchi will be displaying works, while student submissions, including film projects and installations, are also being featured.

'The 15th Entertainment Art Exhibition'
The first "Entertainment Art Exhibition" began as a charity project in 1999, and it has held exhibitions in museums and cultural centers around Japan ever since. For its 15th year, the exhibition aims to help support areas recovering from the Great East Japan Earthquake by displaying works based on "Human Dignity," a theme to show celebrities' solidarity with those suffering from the aftermath of the disaster.

Surveying the city from a different viewpoint
Beside Stephan Balkenhol's sculpture "Big Head with Three Part Relief" a note reads, "Nothing here is as it should be." This figureless "head" set against a black void represents "Mr. Everyman," that common figure, detached from his surround and considering his place in the world.

'Why Not Live for Art? II: 9 Collectors Reveal Their Treasures'
First held in 2004, this exhibition is the second by Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery to present works owned by individual collectors. In the past 10 years, art collecting has become more common and the network between collectors has expanded. As the gallery revisits the world of private acquisitions, it also reflects on how art collection has changed.

'Yokai: Demons, Folklore Creatures and GeGeGe no Kitaro'
In collaboration with broadcasters NHK, the Mitsui Memorial Museum continues its annual summer exhibition series with an exploration of the history of the ghosts and demons of Japanese folklore: the yokai. Through an extensive collection of noh masks, handscrolls, ukiyo-e (woodblock prints) and more, the exhibition spans the history of yokai from the Middle Ages to today.

'War/Art 1940-1950: Sequences and Transformations of Modernism'
Japanese art of the 1940s is usually divided into that of pre-World War II, wartime and post-war works. Here, however, the modern art museums of Kamakura and Hayama are, for the first time, presenting their 1940s works collectively as products of the entire decade. The show aims to reveal the rich artistic creativity that existed during that time, as well as chart seminal developments in Japan's modernism.

An art expedition to Southeast Asia
Confronting the ongoing state of transformation that characterizes their native Singapore, two artists exhibiting at a new exhibition, "Welcome to the Jungle," adopt quite different approaches and media. Francis Ng in "Constructing Construction #1" turns his camera on an unfinished section of an ugly new highway, a speeding bus whizzing by. Hong Sek Chern, meanwhile, applies Chinese ink to traditional rice paper to map out a multiple-faceted view of the country's public-housing apartments in "Constructing Old and New."

In New York, the Guggenheim goes Gutai
By now, the looks, character and history of Gutai, the post-World War II Japanese art movement born in 1954 in Ashiya, between Osaka and Kobe, are familiar to regular viewers of modern-art exhibitions in Japan. Last summer's "Gutai: The Spirit of an Era," a survey of the movement's evolution and its participants' diverse accomplishments, which was shown at the National Art Center, Tokyo, was the largest presentation of its kind to date in Japan. Early last year, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, also included some superb Gutai works in a show of abstract paintings; in 2011, it presented a solo exhibition of founding Gutai member Atsuko Tanaka's works.
