Future high-rise building could provide free views of Jingu Stadium games
It appears some apartment dwellers in Tokyo will soon have a great view of Yakult Swallows games at Meiji Jingu Stadium. A high-rise building is under construction right across the street from the ballpark. It's on the road that runs from the future site of the new National Stadium to the T intersection where it meets Route 246 at Gaien-mae Metro Station.

Yasuyuki Namikawa: A master of cloisonne color and design
There are two ways that the skill of craftsmanship can be emphasized: by showing it off through masses of meticulous decorative details, or by stripping everything to the bare minimum and bringing into focus just a few perfectly executed qualities. Think of it as maximalism vs. minimalism — Gucci vs. Kinfolk.

Artisanal chocolates have hit Japan's convenience stores
Craft beer, move over. It's time for artisanal "bean-to-bar" chocolate to take the spotlight at Japan's convenience stores. Sweets-maker Meiji has recently rolled out a series of chocolate bars called The Chocolate, proudly displaying the high cacao percentage and including graphs on the packaging proving the bitterness of each. This treat (¥237 a pop — a truly "craft" price) comes in several flavors, running from "elegant bitter" to "comfort bitter." But my local store recommended Framboise, which was a great call. It offsets the flavor of rich chocolate with the subtle taste of raspberries. It may be a little overpriced, but it's pretty good if you're in the mood for a decadent dessert.

Meiji Restoration leader's lessons of sincerity
Is there any understanding a man like Saigo Takamori? His spirit seems as vast as his bulk, and his bulk was that of a sumo wrestler. He is "the quintessential hero of modern Japanese history," said historian Ivan Morris.

Baron Raimund von Stillfried: The photographer who invented Japan
To many in the West, Japan is an exotic country, seen through the distorting lens of tourist cliches: cherry blossoms, geisha, samurai, kamikaze. In that sense, little has changed since the Meiji Era (1868-1912), when Japan was first promoted abroad as a sort of Oriental theme park.

Meiji Shrine: grounds to ring in the year
As a relatively new place of worship, established less than a century ago in 1920, Meiji Shrine was originally based around the concept of wakonyu014dsai — a belief that treasured the Japanese 'soul,' while still embracing influences from the West. Its unusual omikuji, therefore, is not the only unique feature of the shrine.
