The 2018 fashion cycle is just beginning
The "new year, new you" cliche that tempts consumers to spend more on style at this time of the year often has even the most cynical admitting that an excuse to indulge feels good. But when it comes to genuinely new fashion, it's actually always lacking at the very start of the year, given that the lion's share of shops are still trying to shift autumn and winter stock, which in the case of autumn was probably on the shelves in mid summer.

The traditional kimono never goes out of style
The fusion of traditional Japanese culture with contemporary life isn't a new concept, but as trends change the results can vary greatly. On the runway, we are seeing sophisticated ideas that infuse new looks with time-honored tastes in subtle yet effective ways; while on the streets, the stylings of old-world Japan have never been more kitsch and trendy. With plenty of second-hand kimono readily available, going full traditional also need not be expensive, or, if you're in need of something for Halloween, they can add some authenticity to the spookiest costumes.

Dempagumi.inc's Risa Aizawa on the true power of fashion
Fashion designers can be stiff creatures, especially when it comes to divulging their history or feelings in an interview. However, Risa Aizawa is not your run-of-the-mill fashion designer. She is a member of the five-person Akihabara-born idol group Dempagumi.inc, known more for it's hard-core dedication to otaku fandom than for its runway shows. Even so, she debuted her brand Memuse on the runway during the recent Amazon Fashion Week Tokyo, and the show was one of the most buzzed about of the week.

Japan's cult brands get into character
When the topic turns to "Cool Japan" and the various related efforts to capitalize on Japan's indubitable cultural capital internationally, commendation — or more frequently the lack thereof — is easy to come by. The question of how Japan markets its own culture domestically, however, is a largely forgotten dimension, but one that may play a part in making Cool Japan actually cool. Evidenced by the waves of 19th-century Japonism, the outbreaks of otaku (fanboy and fangirl culture) overseas in the 1980s and even the current crop of inbound shoppers, Japan has historically done remarkably well out of focusing internally and letting the resultant culture speak for itself.
