Horror of 'Child 44' is bogged down by Soviet era bureaucracy
The recurring line in "Child 44" is, "there is no murder in paradise." It's a reflection of the political image projected in the Soviet Union during the Stalin era — these were a paradisal states, free from Western ills like poverty and crime, and there was nothing more to say about it. But the backdrop of "Child 44" is Moscow in 1952, and it feels more like a hellhole of oppression than paradise.

Why does the surrealism in Ryan Gosling's 'Lost River' fail?
'They flooded a bunch of towns when they dammed the river. That's why they call this Lost River," says Rat (Saoirse Ronan), a character in actor Ryan Gosling's directorial debut, "Lost River."

Will Smith gets under a waterfall of money in 'Focus'
Will Smith rarely smiles when he isn't running around in a "Men in Black" film. Which is a shame, because comedy and Smith seem like a natural match, especially when he is paired with Tommy Lee Jones, his trusted curmudgeon buddy in the MIB series.

'Intimate Rivals' gives needed context to Japan and China's volatile relationship
The relationship between Japan and China extends back more than a millennium but, in spite of (or, perhaps, because of) all that the two countries have borrowed, traded and shared, that relationship could be best summed up as "Intimate Rivals" — the title of Sheila A. Smith's new book.

Theater's magic brings wonderful 'War Horse' to life
It is now 100 years since the start of World War I, which claimed close to 17 million lives before it ended in November 1918. Hence the Tokyo opening of "War Horse" — a play set during that so-called "war to end war" — serves in part as a memorial to the awful conflict.

Why Winding Refn doesn't care if you hate his movie
Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn was a film-school dropout who gained sudden acclaim at the tender age of 24 with his ultraviolent 1996 film "Pusher," which was eventually developed into a trilogy. He reached wider audiences with "Fear X" (starring John Turturro) and British crime flick "Bronson," but it was really 2011's hyper-speed "Drive" with Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan, about a stuntman who moonlights as a getaway-car driver, that broke the doors open.

Slow start by Knicks this season a combination of bad luck, bad decisions by management
Perhaps the larger question with the New York Knicks, who began the season a disappointing 3-10, is how could that happen given their roster that boasts the second-highest payroll in the NBA.

A year of tough choices at Fuji
Wandering around on the opening day of this year's Fuji Rock, I got the impression that numbers were down on previous years. Of course, anyone who has ever been stuck in the event's seemingly never-ending lines for the portable toilets — or who's been shut out from seeing their favorite band as the tent-like confines of Red Marquee filled to the brim — will be able to tell you that this is not necessarily a bad thing.

U.S. military spending cuts have gone too far
We shouldn't gut defense. A central question of our budget debates is how much we allow growing social spending to crowd out the military and, in effect, force the United States into a dangerous, slow-motion disarmament.

Pakistan key to Afghan war
U.S. President Barack Obama is right to talk about "the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan" and the need to evolve an integrated U.S. strategy toward these two closely tied countries. But even as he has embarked on some major steps, his evolving strategy does not suggest a meaningful integration.
