Name of Japan's next era to avoid initial letters used to refer to past four eras
The romanized name of the new Imperial era, to be introduced next May, is unlikely to start with the first letter of any of the last four eras, taking heed of a practice whereby era names are abbreviated with their starting letter, according to sources close to the matter.

Showa's not giving up without a fight
The government has decided that the 31st year of Heisei will end with the abdication of Emperor Akihito 120 days into 2019, on April 30. Then on May 1, Crown Prince Naruhito will become emperor and a new nengō (name of the period of reign) will be announced.
