Gunma's 'Brazil Town' offers a carnival of cuisine
This month A Taste of Home is taking a field trip to Oizumi, Gunma Prefecture. Oizumi, an otherwise ordinary town, is home to roughly 4,000 Brazilians — about one-tenth of the local population. Most of them work in nearby factories (Subaru is a big one). But some of them are working to make life a little more comfortable for their compatriots, by running restaurants and shops that sell Brazilian food. Alighting at Nishi-Koizumi Station, I was there for the food.

Woman in Brazil convicted over Japan road death
A Japanese-Brazilian woman was sentenced to 26 months in prison, commuted to one year of community service, Monday by a Sao Paulo district court for causing a road accident that resulted in the death of a 2-year-old Japanese girl in Shizuoka Prefecture in 2005.

Charcoal-grilled fish, lots of fresh seafood and seasonal produce, rice at least once a day and no fussy seasonings or sauces: Portuguese cuisine has so many points of overlap with Japan's, it's a wonder that it hasn't caught on here more widely.
