Fabled strand of 500 pines
Beautiful beaches, we've all seen our share, right? But a beautiful beach that's also historic and sacred? That sounds worth driving out of our way for — especially as the way takes us over a span I've long yearned to traverse: the Ondo Bridge, a delightful crimson structure over the Ondo Strait, a 90-meter wide channel that separates Kure City from the island of Kurahashi, Hiroshima Prefecture. Legend has it that, in the 12th century, the great warlord-politician Taira no Kiyomori carved out the strait in a single day to facilitate trade with China.

Slow Beach "Lover Lover"
Slow Beach is somewhat of a supergroup in Tokyo's indie-rock scene. The group finds Dai Ogasawara, founder of twee-leaning netlabel Ano(t)raks, hooking up with producer Kai Takahashi, who is responsible for some of the most interesting electronic compositions of the year, including a chilled-out remix of Phoenix's "Entertainment." They have teamed up with Yuriko Ohno (keyboard) and Keito Taguchi (bass) to create "Lover Lover," a collection of tropically tinged songs arriving just in time for summer. Slow Beach isn't just floating on beach imagery and surf-rock guitars, though, as "Lover Lover" conceals some good sonic experimentation and a melancholic heart.

Amami Oshima: Take a trip to the cloud forest of the imagination
Despite the environmental mistakes of the postwar decades, the violation of a once pristine landscape, a recent trip to Amami Oshima, gave very real cause for hope. Some regions have always, it seems, been in good shape. Flying over the island's green, volcanic hills, I felt as if I were gazing down upon an eastern Camelot.

Jogashima: Awash with thousands of cherry blossoms
The escalator at the Keikyu Line's Misakiguchi Station transported me to a windswept hilltop where a booth provided information on places to pick mikan (tangerines) and shops sold tuna, toasted laver bread and horse mackerel seasoned with mirin (a rice wine). I boarded a bus. As it descended between mikan orchards and freshly planted fields, I noted further intimations of the sea — trucks emblazoned with "Tuna Express" and "High-Class Blue Fin Tuna." After arriving at the harbor, I strolled along a waterfront crowded with shoals of tuna restaurants.

Hayama, Kanagawa: A spring abound with vermillion azaleas
