Yoronto: A small island with unique culture where time and space expand
The sea is only as blue as the sky permits. Even in the deep southern islands of the Nansei-Shoto, an overcast day can turn the sub-tropics into a mirror image of some of the more relentlessly dreary resort towns of my own country, England. One thinks of the ingloriously named Minehead, the estuary wilderness of Canvey Island, the pebble shore at Chesil Beach.

So far this year, most of the media attention paid to the music industry has focused on scandal rather than songwriting.

The genius of Brian Wilson: Beach Boys mastermind is short on words, long on legacy
As far as I can tell, Brian Wilson is in a good mood. Speaking from his Los Angeles home, the legendary Beach Boys mastermind certainly sounds upbeat, laughing when his dogs interrupt us, and seems enthusiastic about bringing "Pet Sounds," his opulent masterpiece, to Japan to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Lunch on a 'beach' in the center of the city
I wiggle my toes in soft white sand and watch the children play happily a few feet away. Just add the sound of the crashing surf and you might have tricked me into thinking I was on a beach holiday — as one of the little girls exclaims, emerging from her stroller, "Mommy, are we in Guam?"

'Love & Mercy' is a biopic worthy of Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys
Real surfers don't listen to The Beach Boys. That's one of the first things I learned while hanging out at the ocean toting a surfboard, and it's also one of the lines from "Love and Mercy," a biopic about The Beach Boys frontman Brian Wilson. Along with his brothers, Dennis and Carl, and their cousin Mike Love, Brian's meteoric rise to stardom came at about the same time he started arguing with Mike about musical direction.

Ghostly footprints of the 'modern girl' along Kamakura's coastline
There's a scene in Junichiro Tanizaki's serialized novel "Naomi" (originally titled "A Fool's Love") from 1924 where the besotted protagonist, Joji, watches his wife, Naomi — part Lolita, part Madame Bovary, all trouble — through the pine trees. Having just emerged from a seaside villa, she is sashaying across the sand in nothing more than a cloak and high heels; the pied piper to no less than four men. The beach is Kamakura's Yuigahama, which was a draw for moga — the new so-called modern girls who emerged after the 1923 Tokyo earthquake shook up the city and its culture. (The term "Naomi-ism" was also used at the time to describe the new phenomenon of modern girls, but I guess that one didn't stick.)
