What we can learn from cats and dogs
Chikao Muratani is a veterinarian and owner of Anima Animal Hospital in Tokyo's Chuo Ward. Having worked in the United States for years, Dr. Muratani is fully bilingual and his spotless and beautifully designed clinic is known as a neighborhood hangout. People with pets are encouraged to pop by weekly for a chat and to measure their furry companions' weight in order to keep a constant check on their health. Pets are treated to healthy snacks and a bit of playtime. Muratani adores animals, and the feeling is mutual: On the streets around his clinic, dogs on their daily walks can be spotted whisking their humans to see their friend, who happens to be their doctor, too.

Strays become woman's calling
It's a typical evening in the Mercer-Tojo household. Susan Mercer, 37, has just settled down their 2-year-old for the night, tucking him in as he cuddles with five or six cats. Several dogs prowl restlessly, eager for a pat or a kind word. Scooping a kitten off the floor, Mercer settles down to wait for her husband, Hitoshi Tojo, who has gone to pick up two aging cats whose owner just passed away.

"I'm ready to rent a room in Anaheim," he wrote in an email.

PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk: making the fury fly
My favorite story about Ingrid Newkirk, the founder and head of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), the animal-rights organization, involves her storming the dining room of the Four Seasons hotel in New York, depositing a dead raccoon on Anna Wintour's dinner plate and calling the veteran editor of American Vogue a "fur hag." Wintour, a long-time PETA hate figure for her support of the fur industry, calmly covered it with a napkin and then ordered coffee.

Communing with wild animals in Japan's famous culture of cute
In the first of a series of recent articles about nonindigenous animal species in Japan, the Asahi Shimbun reported comments made at this year's annual meeting of the International Association of Falconry. The meeting, which took place earlier this month in Prague, saw the chairperson criticize the Japanese media for emphasizing the value of three Harris hawks that had been stolen from an Ibaraki pet shop in May 2004. By saying that the hawks were worth 5 million yen each, the chairperson implied, the media gave the impression that birds of prey were simply expensive objects.
