Hush, little baby
Hush, little baby: Nick and his three siblings were found crying, desperately trying to suckle at the belly of their dead mother. They were rescued by a kind soul out walking a dog, taken into foster care and have now grown into healthy youngsters. Nick is affectionate, loves people and absolutely adores his foster family's dog. His only vice, if it can be called that, is that he loves to suck on things — your finger, your chin, anything! His urge to suckle comes no doubt from the trauma of losing his mother so young. A heart-wrenching start, but thanks to the kindness of many, a story that we hope will see him with a new family of his own and living happily ever after.

As perceptions of animals evolve, so does English

A media circus surrounds Japan's animal acts
The Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums has voted to stop buying dolphins captured during drive hunts conducted by fishermen in Taiji, Wakayama Prefecture. For the past decade, the town has received a great deal of negative publicity because of its dolphin slaughter, and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums told its Japanese member that it would be expelled if it continued to patronize the hunt, which WAZA views as being "cruel." Since JAZA members rely on WAZA for animal exchange and other zoo-related activities, the majority gave in to the ultimatum, but a few aquariums say they may leave the group because Taiji is their only source of new dolphins.
